Applegate Valley Oregon

Applegate, Oregon

Applegate, Oregon, is an unincorporated community located along the Applegate River in the southwestern part of the state. Applegate lies just to the west of Medford on state highway 238. The same highway also links Applegate to Grants Pass which lies just to the north.

History

The 19th century history of this part of Jackson County features development of the lumber potential of the region. The growth of the timber industry was spurred by the arrival of the railroad in nearby Medford and Grants Pass in the 1880s. In the 1920s, the first public airport in this part of the state came to nearby Medford. In recent decades, Applegate has benefited from the growth of Medford and Grants Pass as some who worked in those cities sought out the less developed areas around Applegate in which to live.

Parks and Recreation

The Cantrall-Buckley County Park is found just to the east of Applegate. With 1.75 miles of frontage on the Applegate River and 88-acres of surrounding land, the park is an ideal destination for a variety of recreational pursuits. There's a campground and a variety of picnic areas. One such area can accommodate groups of 150-400 people. Some just come here to relax amidst the stands of laurel and pine trees.

Attractions and Activities

There are a number of areas surrounding Applegate that are popular for recreational gold panning. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management has designated four areas within its jurisdiction in the area that are available to those that wish to pan for gold.

Applegate residents will find a host of cultural opportunities in both Medford and Grants Pass. In 2000, the historic Rogue Theatre was transformed into a performing arts center in Grants Pass. The 1930s-era venue has been meticulously restored, and a state-of-the-art lighting and sound system has been installed. As a result, the art deco structure is a wonderful place at which to take in a live concert, dance performance or theatrical production.

Events

Some area residents take in the festivities at Boatnik in Grants Pass every Memorial Day weekend. A boat show on the Rogue River includes a variety of dynamic watercraft like drags, sprints and hydros. On Sunday night, attendees of all ages revel in the fireworks and their reflections in the river waters below. Memorial Day itself is commemorated with an exhilarating F-15 flyover. A major event on Monday is the whitewater hydroplane competition.
