Williams Oregon

Williams, Oregon

Williams, Oregon, is an unincorporated community in the extreme southwestern part of the state. This Josephine County settlement is situated along Williams Creek, which flows into the Applegate River. Area residents in Williams OR homes can easily reach Oregon Route 238 to the north. That state road links those living in the area to the major population centers of Medford and Grants Pass to the east and to the north, respectively.

History

The earliest settlers of European descent arrived in the early 1850s, largely interested in the gold deposits that had been discovered in the region. In fact, Josephine County is named after a daughter of one of the earliest gold prospectors. As gold fever receded, timber and then tourism helped to build the area's economy. The community and the creek were named for Capt. Robert Williams. He became widely known for his involvement in clashes with the Rogue River Indians during the Rogue River Wars.

Parks and Recreation

Just to the southwest of Williams, in the Siskiyou Mountains, one finds whitewater rafting. To the west, the Pacific Ocean is found less than two hours away. The mountains offer snow skiing less than 1.5 hours away. Hiking and mountain biking opportunities abound in nearby national forests.
