Applegate, Oregon, is an unincorporated community located along the Applegate River in the southwestern part of the state. Applegate lies just to the west of Medford on state highway 238. The same highway also links Applegate to Grants Pass which lies just to the north.
The 19th century history of this part of Jackson County features development of the lumber potential of the region. The growth of the timber industry was spurred by the arrival of the railroad in nearby Medford and Grants Pass in the 1880s. In the 1920s, the first public airport in this part of the state came to nearby Medford. In recent decades, Applegate has benefited from the growth of Medford and Grants Pass as some who worked in those cities sought out the less developed areas around Applegate in which to live.
