Murphy Oregon

Murphy OR

Murphy, Oregon, is an unincorporated community just south of Grants Pass on Oregon Route 238. The state highway also links Murphy and Medford, which lies to the east. Murphy is in northern Josephine County in the far southwest corner of Oregon.

The earliest travelers of European descent, trappers and hunters, arrived in the area in the early part of the 19th century. In the 1840s, the first settlers began to establish their homes in the area. The area supplied timber to the growing communities in southern Oregon like Medford and Grants Pass. The Rogue River provided a means for shipping timber and crops to more urban markets. In the 1880s, the railroad arrived, and those products could now be transported with greater ease than ever before. During the 20th century, orchards gave way to wineries, and tourism gained importance.

Parks and Recreation

Applegate County Park is a Murphy facility located just north of route 238. It's a great place for picnickers, and for those with kids that want to try out the playground. Cantrall-Buckley County Park is a beautiful, 88-acre park just on the other side of Applegate. It offers visitors almost two miles of frontage on the Applegate River. Picnickers and campers frequent the facility. In fact, one of the four picnic areas provided can serve up to 400 people at one time.

Attractions and Activities

Murphy lies in a region that still attracts recreational gold panning to this day. In fact, the Bureau of Land Management maintains four areas for this enjoyable and at times profitable pursuit.

Murphy residents that appreciate the arts will want to attend events at the Rogue Theatre. From 1938 until 1999, the art deco structure attracted movie fans. Then, in 2000, the theater became a performing arts center. A modern sound and lighting system was added to the Rogue, and the facility now hosts live concerts and theatrical plays.

Just up the road, Grants Pass hosts Boatnik during the course of each Memorial Day weekend. A number of interesting experiences are offered during the event, including a popular boat show on the Rogue River. A carnival is held right along the river as well. The meaning of Memorial Day itself is commemorated in part by an F-15 flyover. Monday also brings a dramatic whitewater hydroplane contest to Grants Pass and the Rogue River.
