Murphy, Oregon, is an unincorporated community just south of Grants Pass on Oregon Route 238. The state highway also links Murphy and Medford, which lies to the east. Murphy is in northern Josephine County in the far southwest corner of Oregon.
The earliest travelers of European descent, trappers and hunters, arrived in the area in the early part of the 19th century. In the 1840s, the first settlers began to establish their homes in the area. The area supplied timber to the growing communities in southern Oregon like Medford and Grants Pass. The Rogue River provided a means for shipping timber and crops to more urban markets. In the 1880s, the railroad arrived, and those products could now be transported with greater ease than ever before. During the 20th century, orchards gave way to wineries, and tourism gained importance.
