Rogue River Oregon

Rogue River, Oregon

Rogue River, Oregon, is located just off of I-5 on the banks of the Rogue River. The community of about 2,000 people is nestled in a valley that is noted for its dry summers and temperate winters. Those that own Rogue River real estate live close to three different mountain ranges: the Cascades, the Coast Range and the Siskiyous. This southwestern Oregon community is in Jackson County, about 1,000 feet above sea level.

History

The community was originally called Woodville, and the name remained for many years. In fact, the Woodville post office was in operation from 1876 to 1912. In 1912, the town became Rogue River, and the name of the post office was updated as well.

Parks and Recreation

Valley of the Rogue State Park is only three miles outside of town, just off of Interstate 5. The hiking trail along the river is popular, and the wild blackberries are fun to pick when they are in season.

Anglers that invest in Rogue River OR homes will enjoy the endless pursuit of steelhead, salmon and native trout along various stretches of the Rogue River. Along other stretches of the river, whitewater rafting is very popular, especially when the water flow is higher.

Attractions and Activities

The Woodville Museum recalls the days over a century ago when the community was still called Woodville. There are exhibits of various pioneer artifacts, and the original town jail has been erected behind the museum.

The Palmerton Arboretum offers visitors five acres of varied species of trees and shrubs from across the globe. The facility also includes a playground, picnic area and duck pond. A 1930s-era nursery was converted into the arboretum so a number of the trees are fully mature. There are trees native to the Pacific Northwest, and there are also non-native species like Mediterranean cedars and Japanese pines.

Events

In the later part of June every year, Rogue River hosts the National Rooster Crowing Contest. Since 1953, this unique event has included an old-time parade, live music and much more.
